Here’s a video of this comet by Jay Leno
Built in 1946, finished in 1947, the Comet is perhaps the most important sport cars because it is America’s first post-war sports car. Omohundro had planned wide-scale production of their car, which they called the Comet, based on a 114-inch wheelbase Ford chassis using a 1946 Mercury flathead V-8 (the first chassis, however, sits on a 112-inch wheelbase, indicating ’40 or ’41 Ford). They hammered the first body out of aluminum and planned on taking molds off the body so they could pop out identical fiberglass bodies, but Ford balked at supplying Omohundro with production chassis.
The car never received much publicity at the time – if only because custom car shows and American car magazines weren’t really around at the time.
